Business Plan Competitions
Enter a business plan competition! Each year the CIE sponsors business plan competitions to help students formalize their business ideas and present them to potential funding sources.
For now there is one at BYU Hawai'i and one in Japan, with preparations already in motion for competitions in the Philippines, Taiwan, Mongolia, Fiji and Samoa. Students from any major can enter. So, if you have a great business idea, we will help you develop it. If you want to start a business, but don't have any ideas, we will help you find one. If you don't know anything about running a business or writing a business plan, we will assign you an entrepreneur mentor. Our job is to help those students who are sincere about returning to their home countries and changing lives through entrepreneurship (starting businesses).
Entrepreneurship Conference
Attend the Annual Conference! No registration necessary, just come to whatever you can. Each year, along with the Business Plan Competition, we hold our annual Entrepreneurship Conference. Entrepreneurs from all over the world come to speak, judge the competition and participate on panel discussions, all for the students. Some of our more popular panels last year included: "E-Business: Making Money on the Web", "Women in Entrepreneurship", Creating Wealth Through Real Estate", "Doing Business in Asia & Japan", and "Habits of Highly Successful Entrepreneurs". Take a look at the Conference Schedule for Students and come learn about Entrepreneurship.
Entrepreneur Lecture Series & Luncheon
Hear from those who have done it - succeeded with their own business! Every Tuesday at 10 am, during Fall & Winter semesters, the CIE sponsors the Entrepreneur Lecture Series. Successful international and local entrepreneurs who come and tell you how they did it. Come and listen to their inspirational stories and ask questions. On-Campus Businesses through IBC
The Integrated Business Core (IBC) through the School of Business is intended to give students the opportunity to learn the fundamental theories of business, and then to apply that knowledge through a realistic exposure to the business world. The students create a business idea, write and present a business plan, acquire funding for, operate, and close a small business during the term. The core content instruction is synchronized with the real-time challenges of creating and managing the business. In order to facilitate this unique instructional approach, students are treated as employees and self-organized into companies consisting of approximately 12-15 employees per company. Each company has a President, an Executive Vice President and Vice Presidents of Marketing, Finance and Operations. These company leaders decide how to organize other members of the team.
The IBC has four course modules, finance, marketing, entrepreneurship and business communications, each taught by a different instructor. In addition, the instructors act as advisors to the student teams or companies. The IBC lasts sixteen weeks with two concurrent activities, traditional business classes and operating the business. For more information, follow this link to the full IBC description .
